  • Assist in route and collection operations by observing truck routes, documenting dwell times, identifying bottlenecks, and compiling operational metrics that feed into route optimization efforts and cost-reduction analyses.
  • Perform data collection, entry, and basic analysis for waste tonnage, recycling rates, contamination metrics, and facility throughput; prepare visual dashboards and summary reports for supervisors and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with environmental compliance teams to support permit recordkeeping, tracking of manifest documentation, and preparation of regulatory reports required by local and state authorities.
  • Participate in safety walkthroughs and hazard assessments at operational sites; document observed risks and recommended corrective actions, and help implement safety signage, PPE checks, and safety training reminders.
  • Support project teams in piloting waste reduction initiatives, such as composting trials, source-separation programs, or single-stream improvement pilots, by coordinating logistics, tracking participation, and measuring outcomes.
  • Assist with community outreach and education programs, creating materials, attending events, and tracking engagement metrics to promote proper recycling behavior and waste reduction best practices.
  • Help prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs), process maps, and work instructions for routine operational tasks, ensuring procedures reflect current best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and document equipment performance and maintenance needs for sorting lines, compactors, balers, and collection vehicles; coordinate with maintenance teams to schedule preventive repairs and track downtime.
  • Conduct preliminary life-cycle or cradle-to-grave assessments for specific materials or pilot programs under supervision, summarizing environmental benefits and trade-offs for stakeholder review.
  • Support hazardous waste handling procedures by assisting with labeling, segregation, manifesting, and safe storage practices under direct supervision and following regulatory guidance (e.g., RCRA-related practices).
  • Coordinate sample collection and chain-of-custody documentation for laboratory testing of leachate, compost, or residuals when required for environmental monitoring or permit compliance.
  • Assist in vendor and contractor coordination by tracking service agreements, documenting incoming invoices for reconciliation, and supporting procurement of disposal or processing capacity.
  • Compile and maintain asset and inventory logs for bins, carts, signage, and safety equipment; recommend replenishment and improvements to asset tracking.
  • Support grant and program funding efforts by gathering data, drafting program descriptions, and helping to prepare attachments for funding applications related to diversion, education, or infrastructure upgrades.
  • Participate in cross-departmental process improvement workshops, contributing observations from the field and helping to pilot recommended workflow changes that increase throughput or reduce contamination.
  • Assist with GIS-supported mapping projects by collecting field coordinates for collection points, documenting illegal dumping locations, and validating route network data to support planning and enforcement activities.
  • Help implement waste audits and post-implementation monitoring for sustainability initiatives (e.g., zero-waste events), tracking participation, diversion rates, and recommendations for future events.
  • Provide administrative support to operations and sustainability teams by scheduling meetings, preparing meeting notes, maintaining compliance binders, and ensuring documentation is accessible and current.
  • Monitor market conditions for recyclable commodities, collect pricing and demand intel, and assist procurement/sales staff in compiling summaries that inform material marketing and disposition strategies.
  • Support internal and external stakeholder communications by drafting concise status updates, briefing slides, and program summaries for municipal partners, corporate teams, or community groups.
  • Assist with emergency response preparedness by helping update spill response kits, participating in tabletop exercises, and documenting emergency equipment inventory and readiness.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
  • Assist with occasional weekend or early-morning field shifts when operational coverage or seasonal programs demand additional support.
  • Help maintain digital records and cloud-based document libraries to ensure audits and inspections are traceable and retrievable.
