Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop orders, glazing schedules and production specifications to determine dimensioning, tolerances, hardware locations, and sequence of operations required for accurate window assembly.
  • Measure, cut and fit frame and sash components (aluminum, vinyl, wood or composite) using saws, mitre saws, CNC machines, and manual layout tools, ensuring parts meet specified tolerances and square/level requirements.
  • Assemble window frames and sashes using rivet guns, pneumatic tools, corner welders, crimpers, screws and adhesives to produce leak- and wind-resistant units that comply with product specifications and building codes.
  • Install insulating glass units (IGUs), single or dual pane glass, spacers, desiccants and glazing beads; set and secure glass while preventing edge damage and maintaining proper seal depth.
  • Apply sealants, gaskets, thermal tapes and weatherstripping precisely according to manufacturer instructions and company SOPs to achieve required air and water infiltration performance.
  • Mount and adjust hardware, including hinges, locks, handles, balances, rollers and operators so windows operate smoothly, latch securely and meet aesthetic requirements.
  • Perform quality inspections at multiple stages (incoming, in-process and final) using calipers, gauges, squares and inspection checklists; document defects, perform rework when appropriate, and escalate recurring issues.
  • Set up, change over and calibrate jigs, fixtures and tooling for different window types and production runs to minimize downtime and maintain consistent output quality.
  • Package finished window units for shipment — crating, blocking, protective wrapping and labeling — following packing sequences and handling protocols to avoid transit damage.
  • Maintain accurate production records, complete job traveler paperwork, record serial numbers and update ERP/WMS systems for traceability and inventory control.
  • Troubleshoot assembly issues such as misalignment, glass fit problems, hardware interference and sealing failures; diagnose root causes and implement corrective actions in collaboration with maintenance and engineering.
  • Adhere to lockout/tagout, material safety data sheets (MSDS), PPE and all company safety guidelines; actively participate in daily safety huddles and report hazards immediately.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on hand tools, fastening equipment and basic production machinery; report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with maintenance staff to restore uptime.
  • Work to meet daily production quotas and ship dates while balancing speed with the quality standards required for fenestration products.
  • Mentor, train and cross-train junior assemblers, temporary staff and new hires on assembly techniques, tool usage, quality checkpoints and safety practices to build team capability.
  • Monitor inventory levels of consumables—sealants, screws, gaskets, glazing beads, tape—and notify supervisors of shortages to support uninterrupted production.
  • Participate in lean manufacturing, Kaizen and 5S activities to streamline assembly flow, reduce scrap and improve throughput and ergonomics on the production floor.
  • Verify dimensional tolerances and thermal break placement on aluminum and composite profiles and ensure components are free from burrs, sharp edges and cosmetic defects prior to assembly.
  • Coordinate with shipping and logistics teams to stage completed orders correctly, verify packing lists and ensure customer-specific packaging or special handling requirements are met.
  • Follow manufacturer and in-house curing, handling and storage instructions for adhesives and sealants; monitor environmental conditions that affect product curing and performance.
  • Provide technical feedback to engineering and product development teams about common field failure modes, assembly challenges and suggestions for design-to-manufacture improvements.
  • Assist field installation teams with part identification, as-built documentation and clarifications for complex or custom window units to help ensure successful site installation and customer satisfaction.

Secondary Functions

  • Support intermittent layout and cutting tasks to assist the saw/CNC operator during high-volume runs or absenteeism.
  • Help maintain departmental cleanliness, tool organization and consumable restocking to optimize cycle times and prevent production interrupts.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with scheduling, quality and maintenance to align on priorities and escalate process bottlenecks for resolution.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient reading and interpreting blueprints, window shop drawings, work orders and glazing specifications specific to fenestration products.
  • Strong hand and power tool skills: pneumatic rivet gun, electric screwdriver, crimper, mitre saw, chop saw, jigsaw and basic welding/brazing equipment relevant to window fabrication.
  • Experience handling and installing glass (IGUs) safely, including glazing bead installation, spacer handling and desiccant management.
  • Familiarity with extrusion materials (aluminum, vinyl, wood), thermal break concepts, and profile-specific assembly techniques.
  • Competence using measuring tools: tape measure, calipers, combination square, level, protractor and specialized window gauges.
  • Operation and setup experience with production equipment: corner welders, CNC routers, glass handling machinery, and automated fastening stations.
  • Skilled in sealant and adhesive application (bead size, tooling, wet-out) and knowledge of curing times and environmental effects on performance.
  • Quality inspection and documentation: use of inspection checklists, defect tracking, basic SPC concepts and experience reporting in ERP or MES systems.
  • Safe material handling and lifting techniques; experience operating or coordinating with forklift operators for large unit movement.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting, equipment changeover and preventive maintenance tasks to support line uptime.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
