A Wireless Designer is responsible for end-to-end radio access network (RAN) design, propagation and capacity planning, site and antenna specification, and design validation for cellular technologies (LTE, NR/5G, IoT, private networks). This role combines RF engineering, tools-driven propagation modelling, vendor coordination and site survey analysis to translate business and coverage requirements into detailed, buildable wireless network designs that meet performance, regulatory and cost constraints.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead radio network design tasks including site selection, cell layout, frequency assignment and antenna configuration to meet coverage, capacity and handover targets for LTE and 5G NR networks.
  • Develop and maintain detailed propagation models and simulations (Atoll, Planet, ICS, iBwave) using topography, clutter data and building footprints to predict outdoor and indoor coverage and performance.
  • Produce complete link budget calculations, path loss analyses and interference studies that quantify expected signal levels, margins and cell edge performance under multiple load scenarios.
  • Specify antenna systems, downtilt, azimuth, electrical and mechanical mounting requirements and prepare antenna schedules aligned to tower structure and civil constraints.
  • Design and document Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), small cell deployments and indoor coverage solutions, including antenna placement, cabling, headend location and passive/active component lists.
  • Conduct and analyze drive test and walk test data (TEMS, Actix, Nemo) to validate model predictions, identify coverage gaps and prioritize remediation or redesign work.
  • Perform capacity planning and traffic modelling to size RAN resources, spectrum assignments and carrier aggregation strategies that support short- and long-term traffic growth.
  • Configure and validate MIMO, beamforming and Massive MIMO parameters in design models to ensure expected throughput and spectral efficiency gains for 4G/5G services.
  • Prepare detailed network design documentation, site installation drawings, RF design reports, Bills of Materials (BOM), and construction-ready design packages for field teams and vendors.
  • Collaborate with planning, optimization, transport and core teams to ensure designs align with backhaul constraints, latency targets and end-to-end service requirements.
  • Coordinate with tower owners, landlords, municipalities and regulatory bodies to gather site constraints, obtain permits and ensure designs meet local regulations and safety codes.
  • Engage with vendors and integrators to evaluate equipment options, assess vendor drawings, approve site-specific BOMs and negotiate installation and integration work scopes.
  • Support feasibility studies for new sites, site swaps, co-location and tower reinforcements by producing structural, RF and cost-impact analysis and recommendations.
  • Model and mitigate inter-cell interference and adjacent channel interference through frequency reuse, power control, antenna selection and tilting strategies.
  • Validate radio parameter and configuration settings on the network (CSI, RSRP/RSRQ thresholds, TAC/PCI planning) and handover matrices to reduce dropped calls and signaling issues.
  • Run sensitivity analyses and design trade-offs (coverage vs capacity vs cost) and present recommended options to product owners, program managers and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to network rollout plans including milestones, resource estimates, risk logs and acceptance criteria for new builds, technology refreshes and densification programs.
  • Provide on-call design support for build teams during construction and commissioning phases to resolve design-to-field discrepancies and expedite site acceptance.
  • Maintain and update RF design repositories, GIS layers and asset databases (iBwave database, network inventory) to reflect actual deployed configurations and design revisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement by incorporating field feedback, post-deployment performance metrics and optimization learnings back into design heuristics and templates.
  • Ensure compliance with RF exposure (EMF), safety, and zoning regulations by producing required documentation and coordinating site-level safety compliance checks.
  • Mentor junior designers and create design guidelines, templates, and knowledge transfer materials to standardize designs and accelerate team ramp-up.
  • Estimate implementation cost impacts and prepare comparative analyses for technology options (e.g., FDD vs TDD, small cell vs macro, mid-band vs mmWave) to support investment decisions.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • RF planning and design for cellular networks (LTE, 5G NR) with strong understanding of RAN principles and mobile radio propagation.
  • Hands-on experience with propagation and planning tools such as Atoll, Planet, ICS, Mentum, iBwave and MapInfo/GIS.
  • Drive test and post-processing skills using TEMS, Actix, Nemo or similar tools to validate coverage and performance.
  • Link budget, path loss modeling, antenna pattern analysis, and interference analysis expertise.
  • Knowledge of DAS, small cells, indoor/outdoor integration, and strategies for densification and in-building coverage.
  • Understanding of MIMO, beamforming, carrier aggregation and RF parameterization for NR/LTE.
  • Solid experience with frequency planning, PCI planning, neighbor lists and handover optimization.
  • Proficiency in RF data analysis and scripting with Python, MATLAB, or R for automation, KPI analysis and visualization.
  • Experience with site design documentation tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, iBwave design) and creation of build-ready drawings.
  • Familiarity with transport/backhaul requirements, latency constraints and integration with core/network layers.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and RF exposure (EMF) standards and permitting processes.
  • Project scoping, BOM preparation, cost estimation and vendor coordination for rollouts and site builds.
  • Experience maintaining and updating network inventory and databases (Excel, SQL, iBwave DB, GIS).
  • Ability to interpret structural and civil reports to ensure safe antenna and equipment installations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, or closely related technical discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Telecommunications, Wireless Communications, RF Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Professional certifications or vendor training in wireless planning tools (iBwave Certified, Atoll Training) and cellular technologies.
