Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and document end-to-end integration solutions between Workday and third-party systems (payroll, timekeeping, benefits, recruiting, finance, identity management, vendors) including data flow diagrams, transformation rules, and error-handling strategies.
  • Build and configure Workday integrations using EIB, Workday Studio, Core Connectors, Integration System User (ISU) configurations and Report-as-a-Service (RaaS), ensuring maintainable, secure, and auditable implementations.
  • Develop and maintain custom web service integrations using Workday SOAP and REST APIs, including authentication (OAuth, WS-Security), XML/JSON payload design, XSLT transformations and schema validation.
  • Implement secure file-based integrations using SFTP, managed file transfer (MFT) tools and batch job orchestration, ensuring encryption, PGP key management and adherence to SLAs.
  • Author detailed data mappings and transformation specifications that align Workday tenant fields with source/target system attributes; validate mapping logic against business rules and compliance requirements.
  • Lead integration testing phases including unit testing, system integration testing (SIT) and support user acceptance testing (UAT): create test plans, test cases, test data, and manage defect resolution through to closure.
  • Troubleshoot, triage and resolve production integration issues rapidly; perform root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions while communicating status and impact to stakeholders.
  • Monitor integration health, build proactive alerts and dashboards, and optimize performance for high-volume data flows to meet latency and throughput requirements.
  • Collaborate with HR, Payroll, Finance and Security teams to align integrations with business process configurations, Workday business process framework, and security groups to ensure correct data access and role-based behaviors.
  • Configure and manage Workday security for integrations, Integration System Users, and integration-specific security groups; ensure least-privilege access and compliance with internal controls.
  • Maintain integration deployment processes and release management practices across Workday tenants (development, QA, production), including migration steps, tenant refresh handling, and rollback procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive integration documentation — technical design documents, runbooks, operational runbooks, data dictionaries and knowledge-base articles for support teams.
  • Partner with middleware, API management and other IT teams (Dell Boomi, MuleSoft, Azure Logic Apps, API Gateways) to coordinate hybrid integration scenarios and reuse common components and error handling patterns.
  • Support change control governance: review and approve integration changes, perform impact analysis, and coordinate scheduled maintenance windows to minimize business disruption.
  • Provide technical subject-matter expertise during Workday upgrades and releases: test impacted integrations, remediate breaking changes and validate compatibility with new Workday versions.
  • Drive data quality and reconciliation processes: create automated reconciliation reports, investigate mismatches, and implement preventative controls to reduce manual fixes.
  • Participate in technical design workshops and requirements sessions to translate business needs into prioritized integration backlogs and epics for agile delivery.
  • Mentor junior integration analysts and developers: provide code and configuration reviews, enforce best practices and promote standardization across integration implementations.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy and security standards (GDPR, HIPAA as applicable), implement appropriate data masking, encryption and retention controls for integration flows.
  • Engage with vendors and third-party providers to onboard new integrations, verify inbound/outbound interfaces, and manage contractual requirements for data exchange.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
  • Provide operational on-call support for high-severity Workday integration incidents and coordinate cross-functional resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for integration delivery processes, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing of integration scenarios.
  • Validate and tune performance of large RaaS or report-based extracts and advise on partitioning, filtering or incremental load strategies.
  • Establish and maintain service-level agreements (SLAs) and operational metrics for integration availability, error rates and mean time to recovery (MTTR).
