Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive client intake assessments including medical history, lifestyle factors, movement screens (e.g., FMS, mobility, posture), strength and cardiovascular benchmarks, and goal-setting interviews to inform individualized training programs.
  • Design evidence-based, periodized workout plans for individuals and small groups that align with client goals—weight loss, hypertrophy, strength, endurance, rehabilitation support, or sports performance—adjusting intensity, volume, and recovery protocols as the client progresses.
  • Deliver one-on-one and group training sessions with clear coaching cues, progressions/regressions, and real-time corrective feedback to ensure safe movement patterns and optimal training adaptations.
  • Provide corrective exercise and mobility strategies to address imbalances, reduced range of motion, and common musculoskeletal complaints while collaborating with healthcare providers when clients require clinical rehabilitation.
  • Monitor client progress through repeated assessments (strength tests, movement screens, body composition measurements, performance metrics) and iterate training programs based on objective data and subjective feedback.
  • Educate clients on foundational nutrition principles, meal timing, macronutrient balance, and hydration strategies to complement exercise programming—within scope and referring to registered dietitians for medical nutrition therapy.
  • Create scalable and goal-specific strength & conditioning programs for athletes, including sport-specific drills, power development, speed/agility work, and conditioning protocols to improve on-field performance.
  • Prescribe and supervise warm-up and recovery modalities (foam rolling, mobility flows, breathwork, active recovery) and advise on sleep, stress management, and periodization to optimize training outcomes.
  • Utilize training software, scheduling platforms, and client apps (e.g., Trainerize, Mindbody, TrueCoach) to deliver remote training programs, track workouts, log metrics, and maintain client communication.
  • Execute client onboarding processes, setting expectations, program timelines, and accountability structures to enhance adherence and retention.
  • Manage client risk through adherence to safety protocols, emergency procedures, and proper spotting techniques; maintain certifications in CPR/AED and First Aid and ensure facility equipment is used safely.
  • Lead targeted small-group classes and specialty workshops (e.g., Olympic lifting fundamentals, TRX suspension training, HIIT, corrective movement) to expand service offerings and drive revenue.
  • Develop customized return-to-sport or return-to-activity plans in consultation with physiotherapists and medical professionals for clients recovering from injury or surgery.
  • Maintain meticulous client records including training logs, progress notes, contraindications, waivers, and consent forms to ensure continuity of care and legal compliance.
  • Drive business development activities such as trial sessions, consultative sales conversations, membership conversion strategies, and follow-up to grow a personal client roster and contribute to facility revenue targets.
  • Implement behavior-change strategies (motivational interviewing, SMART goal-setting, habit-stacking) to increase client motivation, adherence, and long-term lifestyle modification.
  • Create performance reports and deliver periodic reviews to highlight progress, reset goals, and upsell appropriate services like nutrition coaching, specialty assessments, or extended programming.
  • Coordinate cross-functional initiatives with studio managers, front-desk staff, and marketing to schedule offerings, promote workshops, and ensure client experience consistency.
  • Stay current with industry research, certification renewals, and continuing education (CEUs) in exercise science, corrective exercise, and sports nutrition to apply best practices and progressive training methodologies.
  • Provide virtual coaching and hybrid training solutions—including live video coaching, asynchronous workout libraries, and accountability check-ins—to serve remote clients at scale.
  • Customize onboarding packages and pricing proposals for corporate wellness clients, private groups, or long-term coaching contracts and manage contractor relationships for guest instructors.
  • Mentor and train junior trainers on assessment protocols, program design frameworks, client communication best practices, and safety standards to elevate overall coaching quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare and maintain marketing content, social proof, and client testimonials to support personal branding and facility marketing initiatives.
  • Assist in equipment inventory management, light maintenance, and setup of training spaces for sessions, clinics, and live events.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Certified program design and periodization for general population and athlete populations (e.g., NSCA CSCS, NASM PES, ACE, ISSA).
  • Proficiency in functional movement screening and corrective exercise techniques (e.g., FMS, SFMA familiarity, corrective cueing).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
