Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, document, and maintain scalable workout programs and periodization templates for diverse client segments (beginner to advanced, hypertrophy, strength, endurance, rehabilitation) using evidence-based exercise science and client outcome data.
  • Analyze longitudinal client performance and engagement metrics (workout completion, load progression, heart rate, HRV, GPS, RPE) to identify drivers of improvement and dropout, and recommend program adjustments that increase efficacy and retention.
  • Build, maintain, and iterate on program-level KPIs and dashboards (e.g., progression rate, adherence, injury incidence, PR frequency, churn correlation) using BI tools (Tableau, Looker) and SQL to inform product and coaching decisions.
  • Create and execute A/B/n experiments to test hypotheses about workout structure, cueing, session length, intensity distribution, and behavioural nudges; analyze results and translate findings into product and coaching changes.
  • Conduct baseline assessments and movement screens (functional movement, screening protocols) and translate assessment outcomes into individualized program modifications and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with data engineering and product teams to design and validate data pipelines that ingest wearable and app event data, ensuring high-quality, reliable datasets for program performance analysis.
  • Develop and maintain reproducible analysis scripts and models (Python/R, Jupyter/Notebook) to automate cohort analysis, progression forecasting, and personalized rate-of-change recommendations.
  • Translate complex scientific literature and internal analyses into concise, actionable guidance, playbooks, and program templates for coaches, content creators, and product managers.
  • Lead pilot programs and controlled rollouts for new training protocols or features, coordinating cross-functional resources, tracking impact, and building the business case for scaling.
  • Standardize program taxonomy, naming conventions, and progression logic in collaboration with product and engineering to ensure consistency across app, coach workflows, and reporting.
  • Monitor injury and adverse event reports, conduct root-cause analyses, and recommend program safeguards, screening policies, and coach training to reduce incidence and liability.
  • Create and maintain client-facing program content and coach-facing cues, including workout descriptions, progressions, regressions, video libraries, and cue sheets to ensure fidelity of delivery.
  • Provide on-demand technical and programmatic support to coaching teams, including complex case reviews, escalation handling, and structured feedback loops to improve program quality.
  • Segment user populations by physiology, goals, adherence patterns, and device data to recommend targeted program paths and personalization rules that maximize outcomes across cohorts.
  • Estimate and communicate program capacity and resourcing needs for coaching operations, forecasting changes in workload resulting from new products, pricing, or program launches.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards (HIPAA/PHI awareness where applicable, GDPR implications for EU client data), and embed privacy-preserving practices into program analysis.
  • Create and present executive-level reports and presentations that synthesize program performance, highlight strategic opportunities, and recommend prioritization backed by quantitative evidence.
  • Partner with marketing and growth teams to provide program-level insights that inform positioning, creative messaging, and conversion strategies tied to training outcomes and testimonials.
  • Drive continuous improvement by conducting retrospective reviews of program launches, experiments, and operational incidents; document lessons learned and implement process changes.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for exercise prescription and training science within product and analytics forums, mentoring junior analysts and coaching staff on interpreting metrics and implementing best practices.
  • Maintain a continuous scan of academic and industry research on strength training, endurance, recovery science, and wearable metrics, integrating new insights into program evolution.
  • Develop reproducible models and rule-based engines for automatic progression decisions (load, volume, intensity) in the app, working with ML and engineering teams to operationalize personalization logic.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of exercise physiology, strength & conditioning principles, periodization models, and exercise prescription best practices (e.g., hypertrophy, strength, endurance, mobility).
  • Experience designing and iterating structured training programs for digital or hybrid fitness products with measurable progression logic.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and languages: SQL for data extraction, Python or R for analysis and modeling, and familiarity with Jupyter notebooks or RStudio.
  • Experience building dashboards and visualizations in BI tools such as Tableau, Looker, Power BI, or similar for stakeholder consumption.
  • Practical experience with wearable and sensor data (heart rate, HRV, accelerometry, GPS), including data cleaning, alignment, and feature engineering.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing frameworks, experiment design, statistical significance testing, and interpreting causal inference in product contexts.
  • Experience integrating and working with coaching platforms and APIs (e.g., Trainerize, TrueCoach, custom coaching backends) and ingesting CSV/API exports.
  • Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, advanced formulas, and the ability to model projections and cohort analyses.
  • Knowledge of movement screening protocols and basic injury risk assessment and management strategies.
  • Comfort working with anonymized health data and understanding privacy/security considerations (HIPAA awareness desirable).
  • Ability to operationalize program rules into product requirements, including writing clear acceptance criteria and progression logic.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and reproducible analysis practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Human Performance, Biomechanics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Sports Science, Biostatistics, Data Science, or related discipline.
  • Additional coursework or certificate in product analytics, data engineering, or business analytics is a plus.

Experience Requirements

  • Prior experience in a data-driven fitness product, wearable company, or research lab where you regularly translated biometric data into program changes.
  • Certifications such as CSCS (NSCA), NASM, ACSM, or similar are a strong plus; CPR/AED certification required where client-facing work is expected.
