🎯 Role Definition

The Written Translation Analyst is a language and localization specialist responsible for producing, reviewing, and assuring quality of written translations across digital and print content. This role combines advanced linguistic expertise with technical localization skills — using CAT/TMS platforms, machine translation engines, and linguistic QA tools — to deliver accurate, culturally-appropriate, SEO-aware content for internal teams and external audiences. The Written Translation Analyst partners with product, marketing, legal, and engineering teams to adapt source material, manage terminology, and maintain translation memory and quality metrics.

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Junior Translator / Freelance Translator
  • Localization Coordinator or Project Coordinator
  • Linguistic QA Specialist

Advancement To:

  • Senior Written Translation Analyst / Lead Linguist
  • Localization Project Manager
  • Manager of Localization / Head of Localization

Lateral Moves:

  • Content Strategist (multilingual)
  • Terminology Manager
  • Localization Engineer

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Translate and adapt complex source texts (marketing copy, legal agreements, product UI, help center articles, and technical documentation) into target languages while preserving nuance, tone, and intent, ensuring cultural appropriateness and legal compliance.
  • Perform high-quality machine translation post-editing (MTPE) on outputs from MT engines (e.g., DeepL, Google Translate, custom NMT) to reduce cost and turnaround time while meeting defined quality standards and style guides.
  • Conduct multi-pass linguistic quality assurance (LQA) using CAT/TMS-integrated QA checks and standalone tools (Xbench, QA Distiller) to identify and correct terminology, consistency, punctuation, formatting, and tag integrity issues.
  • Maintain and update translation memories (TMs) and glossaries to maximize reuse, reduce cost per word, and improve consistency across products and campaigns.
  • Create, maintain, and enforce language-specific style guides and tone-of-voice documents for multiple stakeholder groups (marketing, legal, support) to ensure consistent brand presence across languages.
  • Manage multilingual terminology databases, resolve term disputes, and implement approved term lists across CAT tools and TMS platforms to prevent mistranslation and ensure regulatory accuracy.
  • Prepare source content for localization by checking source files for localization readiness, validating character encoding, handling placeholders/tags, and collaborating with content owners to remove localization blockers.
  • Review and adapt SEO metadata, keywords, and localized content to preserve search intent, maintain organic visibility, and align with local search behavior and character limits.
  • Execute file-format conversions and handle localization filetypes (XLIFF, JSON, XML, .resx, .properties, CSV) while preserving tags and structural integrity through the localization workflow.
  • Configure and operate Translation Management Systems (Smartling, Transifex, Memsource, SDL Trados GroupShare, memoQ) to create jobs, route tasks, manage workflows, and monitor throughput and quality.
  • Collaborate with engineering and DevOps teams to integrate localization pipelines (CI/CD, CMS, API-based TMS integrations) ensuring automated string extraction and in-context review support.
  • Perform in-context and pseudo-localization testing to validate UI expansions, truncation, and placeholder behavior, and coordinate fixes with product and UX teams.
  • Review vendor and freelance linguist deliverables, provide clear feedback, and maintain vendor scorecards and performance metrics (quality scores, on-time delivery, revision rate).
  • Prepare and present detailed quality reports and dashboards (KPI tracking for quality, turnaround time, cost per word, and reuse rates) to stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for recurring linguistic issues and implement process improvements, such as TM cleanup, stricter QA rules, or updated source content guidelines.
  • Train and onboard in-house and freelance linguists on client-specific glossaries, style guides, TMS tools, and best practices for MTPE and LQA.
  • Support legal and compliance localization by verifying regulatory wording and ensuring translations meet country-specific legal requirements and privacy standards.
  • Localize and proof multilingual marketing campaigns, ensuring copy maintains conversion intent and complies with channel-specific character limits and ad policies.
  • Coordinate and manage small to medium localization projects end-to-end when required, including scoping, resource allocation, scheduling, and client communication.
  • Validate post-production content across channels (websites, mobile apps, emails, PDFs) for layout issues, broken tags, or encoding problems and coordinate remediation.
  • Facilitate cross-functional reviews with product managers, marketers, legal counsel, and regional managers to obtain sign-off on critical translations and localized launches.
  • Manage and resolve escalations related to linguistic quality, missed releases, or critical translation errors, ensuring corrective actions and communication plans are executed promptly.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including automation of recurring tasks, development of macros/scripts for preprocessing/postprocessing, and roll-out of QA rule sets.
  • Assist with data-driven analysis of translation performance and user feedback to iterate on tone, terminology, and localized UX copy for better user engagement and conversion.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc localization and linguistic data requests, including corpus extraction, concordance analysis, and term frequency reports for stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the organization's localization and language technology roadmap by evaluating new MT providers, TMS features, and QA tools.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate functional requirements into localization specifications and to scope international releases.
  • Participate in sprint planning, cross-functional stand-ups, and agile ceremonies to align localization work with product priorities and release schedules.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise for language-related A/B tests and internationalization (i18n) initiatives, advising on cultural nuances and phrasing that impact user behavior.

Required Skills & Competencies
