Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Oversee and coordinate daily operations of xerographic and digital printing equipment (e.g., high-speed xerographic presses and cut-sheet digital presses), ensuring consistent production flow, high yield, and timely delivery of customer jobs.
  • Lead, mentor, and schedule a team of press operators, digital technicians, and finishing staff; manage shift rotations, attendance, and cross-training to maintain continuous production capacity.
  • Maintain and enforce production schedules by prioritizing jobs, sequencing runs, allocating resources, and communicating real-time status to operations management and clients.
  • Perform hands-on setup, calibration, and operation of digital presses including color profiling, density adjustments, and test prints to achieve accurate color reproduction and print consistency.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and workflow issues on xerographic equipment; coordinate with vendor service technicians and in-house maintenance to minimize downtime and expedite repairs.
  • Implement and maintain preventive maintenance programs and checklists for presses, feeders, and finishing equipment to extend equipment life and reduce unplanned outages.
  • Establish and enforce quality control standards and inspection procedures for incoming materials, in-process checks, and final output to ensure prints meet customer specifications and internal quality metrics.
  • Monitor production metrics—such as throughput, waste percentage, uptime/downtime, and first-pass yield—and drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize efficiency and reduce cost per copy.
  • Manage paper handling and stock logistics including roll/cut-sheet selection, inventory tracking, reorder points, and vendor coordination to prevent job delays and maintain material quality.
  • Coordinate prepress and RIP workflows with prepress staff to verify file integrity, imposition, trapping, and color separations before heavy production runs.
  • Oversee finishing and bindery integration—folding, saddle stitching, trimming, inserting, and packaging—ensuring seamless handoffs between departments and that finished goods meet presentation standards.
  • Ensure regulatory and company safety protocols are followed; provide safety training relative to press operation, chemical handling, ergonomics, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Maintain accurate production records, job tickets, and equipment logs; prepare daily and weekly production reports for operations leadership and client billing reconciliation.
  • Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and process documentation; train staff on SOP compliance to promote consistent operation and knowledge sharing.
  • Work with customer service and account management to understand client requirements, provide production estimates, recommend materials/finishes, and manage expectations for special or rush jobs.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for recurring quality or reliability problems and drive corrective action plans that include process changes, training, or equipment upgrades.
  • Control consumable usage (toner, fuser oil, developer, maintenance kits) and manage supply budgets through waste reduction initiatives and vendor negotiations.
  • Manage product testing and sample approvals with clients, providing color proofs and revised runs as necessary to secure final sign-off prior to full production.
  • Oversee and enforce digital asset and file security protocols including secure print queues, client confidentiality, and proper disposal of sensitive printed materials.
  • Drive adoption of lean manufacturing techniques (5S, Kaizen) in the pressroom to improve workflow, reduce non-value-added activities, and improve cleanliness and safety.
  • Train and develop bench strength for all pressroom roles, conduct performance reviews, and create individual development plans aimed at succession and skill diversification.
  • Monitor and maintain environmental controls for print consistency, including humidity, temperature, and storage conditions that affect paper performance and toner behavior.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional continuous improvement projects, including data collection for productivity analysis and pilot testing of new print technologies or workflows.
  • Assist in vendor evaluations and capital equipment recommendations by testing new presses, software, or finishing equipment and providing operational impact assessments.
  • Participate in client-facing job reviews and on-site walkthroughs to translate production capabilities into service proposals and competitive pricing.
  • Help develop training materials and knowledge base articles for digital press operation, color management, and maintenance procedures.
  • Collaborate with IT on integration projects related to MIS, print workflow automation, and secure remote monitoring of equipment performance.
  • Support sustainability initiatives by recommending more efficient consumables, recycling programs, and waste-reduction practices within the pressroom.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation and setup of high-speed xerographic and digital cut-sheet presses (e.g., Xerox, Canon, Ricoh, Konica Minolta).
  • Strong knowledge of color management principles, ICC profiling, spectrophotometer use, and maintaining color consistency across devices.
  • Experience with RIP software and digital front-end systems (e.g., EFI, Fiery, Creo) and prepress file preparation.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and basic electromechanical maintenance skills for press components, feeders, fusers, and transport systems.
  • Familiarity with bindery and finishing equipment (folders, cutters, stitchers, inserters) and the ability to coordinate integrated workflows.
  • Knowledge of paper science and substrate selection, including grain, caliper, GSM, and coatings that impact print quality and finishing.

  • Ability to read schematics, maintenance manuals, and interpret diagnostic codes from press control systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
