Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical and electrostatic problems in xerographic systems using systematic troubleshooting techniques, service manuals and diagnostic tools to restore uptime and meet contractual SLAs.
- Perform preventive maintenance on copiers, MFPs and production printers, including cleaning corona wires, replacing rollers and belts, lubricating mechanical assemblies, and verifying calibration to extend product life and reduce callback rates.
- Replace and service imaging components such as drums, toner cartridges/modules, transfer belts, fusers, developer units and waste toner containers while verifying post-repair print quality and density.
- Calibrate color systems and density controls for accurate color reproduction using spectrophotometers or manufacturer-recommended tools, adjusting registration, linearization and color profiles to meet customer expectations.
- Troubleshoot and repair fuser assemblies, heaters, thermistors, pressure rollers and film sleeves to resolve heat-related print quality and paper-jam issues, ensuring safe handling and correct torque/clearances.
- Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic subsystems, including power supplies, sensors, motor drives, control boards and harnesses, reading schematics and using multimeters or oscilloscopes when required.
- Install, configure and update firmware, device drivers and print languages (PCL, PostScript, PDF, XPS) and work with network administrators to integrate printers into Windows/Linux/Mac environments and print servers.
- Evaluate and perform paper path adjustments and feed mechanism repairs (pick rollers, separation pads, feed trays, duplex units) to eliminate misfeeds, skew and multi-feed problems across a broad range of media.
- Execute detailed root-cause analyses for repeat failures and chronic issues, create corrective maintenance plans, and implement upgrades or hardware modifications recommended by OEM engineering.
- Provide on-site end-user training for basic operation, maintenance best practices, toner change procedures, and consumable management to reduce misuse and lower service demand.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair logs and parts usage in the company’s CRM/CMMS system, documenting troubleshooting steps, replaced parts and recommended follow-up actions for transparency and warranty compliance.
- Stock, organize and manage field-service inventory of critical spare parts, tools and consumables; place orders and coordinate with procurement to minimize downtime and reduce emergency shipments.
- Perform on-site diagnostics for networked printing issues, including IP configuration, SNMP monitoring, secure printing settings, and integration with MFP software suites such as follow-me printing or accounting systems.
- Follow OEM safety procedures and industry best practices when handling toner, fuser components and electrostatic assemblies to prevent burns, burns, contamination and static-related damage.
- Provide timely escalation and technical feedback to tier-2 support or manufacturer engineering when encountering undocumented failures, intermittent firmware bugs or design-related issues.
- Test, verify and document print output quality using standard test pages, grayscale ramps and color charts; recommend corrective actions such as cleaning optics, replacing developer units, or relinearizing color curves.
- Prepare accurate job estimates for large repairs or rebuilds, including labor hours, parts cost and expected turnaround time, and communicate these estimates to dispatch, account managers and customers.
- Support depot repair operations when in-field repairs require a workshop environment—performing teardown, rework, cleaning, and reassembly of complex assemblies following OEM rebuild procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by reporting common failure modes, suggesting preventative parts upgrades, and contributing to technical knowledge bases and service bulletins.
- Coordinate on-site with facilities personnel for safe access, power requirements, and removal/installation logistics for heavy production devices, ensuring minimal disruption to customer operations.
- Maintain certification and OEM training records (e.g., Xerox, Konica Minolta, Canon, Ricoh), attending periodic training sessions to stay current with new models, toner formulations and firmware changes.
- Support warranty and contract compliance by following standard repair authorization procedures, applying correct warranty codes and obtaining pre-authorization for non-covered items when required.
