- Load, unload and secure cargo on trailers and flatbeds using forklift, straps, chains and load bars, verifying load integrity and weight distribution to prevent shifting during transit.
- Receive and inspect inbound trailers and containers for damage, missing seals, and manifest accuracy; document discrepancies and escalate damaged goods or inventory variances to supervisors and the claims team.
- Stage outbound trailers and pallets according to route, carrier, and priority, coordinating with shipping, dispatch, and warehouse leads to meet customer cut-offs and minimize detention.
- Perform pre-operation and post-operation equipment checks (forklifts, yard tractors, trailers) and complete daily inspection logs, reporting defects promptly to maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and safety.
- Assist drivers with backing, docking and securement, using clear hand signals and two-way radio communication to reduce dock incidents and improve turnaround times.
- Load and unload specialized freight including oversized or irregularly shaped items, ensuring use of proper rigging, blocking and bracing techniques and compliance with load securement standards.
- Maintain accurate yard manifests and trailer status records in the Warehouse Management System (WMS) or yard management software, updating trailer location, contents and dispatch status in real time.
- Execute physical inventory counts and cycle counts in yard staging areas, reconcile discrepancies, and collaborate with inventory control to correct records and reduce shrink.
- Manage gate operations during assigned shifts: log incoming/outgoing trucks, verify documentation (BOLs, seals, driver IDs), and ensure only authorized trailers enter or leave the yard.
- Apply safe hazardous materials handling practices by identifying HAZMAT placards, segregating incompatible materials, and following company HAZMAT response protocols when necessary.
- Clear debris, snow, ice and obstacles from yard lanes and staging areas to ensure safe travel paths and prevent forklift/tractor incidents; coordinate with facilities for larger maintenance or repairs.
- Secure trailers and equipment when idle (wheel chocks, trailer brakes, valve covers), implement theft prevention measures, and ensure hazardous energy sources are controlled per lockout/tagout practices.
- Participate in daily huddles and shift turnover meetings, communicating yard status, outstanding issues, and upcoming priorities to ensure continuity between shifts.
- Assist with dock balancing and flow optimization by reprioritizing trailer moves during peak periods, minimizing hold times and improving on-time shipments.
- Complete and maintain accurate paperwork for inbound/outbound shipments including bills of lading, seal logs, inspection reports and incident reports; ensure records are available for audits.
- Respond to yard emergencies, spills, and on-site incidents by following emergency response plans, notifying supervisors, and instituting immediate corrective actions to protect people and property.
- Train and mentor new yard staff on safe equipment operation, yard routing, load securement, and company SOPs, helping to build a safety-first culture and consistent execution.
- Collaborate with carriers and third-party logistics providers to coordinate detention, rejections, and trailer exchanges, working to resolve scheduling conflicts and reduce wait times.
- Implement continuous improvement suggestions for yard flow, trailer utilization and equipment allocation by working with operations leadership and providing data-driven observations.
- Monitor fuel, battery, and maintenance levels of yard equipment; refuel, recharge and swap batteries as needed and log service intervals to support uptime goals.
- Enforce PPE use and safety policies among truck drivers and yard visitors, conducting spot checks and reporting non-compliance to supervisors.
- Support cross-functional projects such as yard layout changes, new WMS rollouts or pilot programs by providing operational input and testing new processes on the ground.
- Maintain a professional, customer-service oriented demeanor when interacting with drivers, carrier reps, and internal stakeholders to promote positive carrier relationships and service reliability.
Secondary Functions
- Assist logistics analysts by providing daily yard throughput data, dwell time observations, and feedback on root causes for delays.
- Help coordinate scheduled maintenance and cleaning of yard surfaces, dock seals and gutters to maintain operational readiness and reduce safety hazards.
- Participate in safety audits, internal inspections, and corrective action plans, implementing recommended changes at the ground level.
- Support dispatch with ad-hoc load reassignments and emergency re-routes during peak volume, natural events, or equipment downtime.
- Maintain and store common yard tools and PPE inventory; request replacements and coordinate with procurement for urgent needs.
