Primary Functions

Operate yard tractors, yard trucks, and hostlers to safely move, position, couple and uncouple trailers and containers within the terminal or yard while complying with company procedures, DOT regulations, and site-specific traffic patterns.
Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of yard tractors and trailers (tires, lights, brakes, hitch, landing gear, fluid levels) and accurately document defects to maintenance using paper logs or electronic maintenance systems.
Spot trailers at dock doors according to dock schedules and load/unload priorities, coordinating with dock supervisors and loaders to minimize dwell time and maintain throughput.
Safely couple and uncouple tractors to semi-trailers using pintle hooks, kingpins, fifth-wheel adjustments and trailer brakes, ensuring proper air-line and electrical connections and that trailer supports are secured when unhooked.
Stage and organize trailers and containers in assigned lot locations to optimize yard capacity, rotation schedules, and first-in/first-out (FIFO) load sequencing while maintaining clear access for emergency routes.
Use handheld radios, tablets or yard management systems (YMS) to receive and confirm assignments, report trailer locations, update status in real time, and escalate exceptions or delays to dispatch.
Execute tight-space backing, setting, and trailer alignment maneuvers with precision to safely place trailers in crowded or constrained yard areas and minimize dock damage.
Maintain accurate trailer inventory records, physical tags and electronic status updates (loaded, empty, maintenance, hold) to support operations planning and freight visibility.

Operate yard forklifts, pallet jacks or telehandlers (when trained and certified) to reposition pallets or containers within the yard and support loading/unloading operations.
Identify and report safety hazards, damaged trailers, fluid leaks, or equipment faults immediately and, where safe, perform temporary safety measures (wheel chocks, cones) until maintenance can respond.
Follow DOT and company requirements for work/rest periods, log hours (if applicable), and maintain accurate time and mileage records as required by company policy and regulations.
Support trailer wash, sanitation or pre-trip staging processes by coordinating with cleaning crews, verifying seals and seals numbers, and documenting completion when required for sensitive freight.
Participate in regular safety meetings, toolbox talks and training sessions; complete mandated certifications (forklift, HAZMAT awareness, defensive driving) and demonstrate continuous compliance with PPE and safety rules.
Assist new yard drivers with on-the-job orientation and mentoring, demonstrating proper coupling/uncoupling, lot navigation, documentation practices and safety culture.
Execute yard sweep and housekeeping duties—remove debris, ensure clear marking of parking spaces and drive lanes, and maintain clean equipment storage to reduce slip/trip hazards and improve operational efficiency.
Coordinate with external drivers and carriers to accept inbound trailers and release outbound trailers, verify BOLs, seals and release documentation and liaise with gate/security for timely throughput.
Support emergency procedures by assisting in equipment immobilization, traffic rerouting and safe recovery of disabled trailers, including properly securing vehicles until maintenance or recovery arrives.
Use basic diagnostic checks to identify common mechanical issues (flat tire, low fluids, lights) and either perform minor adjustments or submit detailed repair requests to maintenance for safe, timely repairs.
Enforce site-specific safety, environmental and security protocols—inspect seals and tamper-evident devices, report suspected cargo tampering, and comply with hazardous materials handling guidance when applicable.
Adapt schedule and priorities based on shift fluctuations, peak inbound/outbound periods, and special event requirements while maintaining professional communication with dispatch and operations leadership.
Maintain reliable attendance, punctuality and readiness to respond to shifting route/yard priorities, including occasional night shifts, weekends and overtime during seasonal peaks.

Secondary Functions

Support ad-hoc yard layout improvements by providing frontline feedback on traffic flow, bottlenecks and equipment placement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Valid CDL Class B or CDL Class A (as required by employer) with clean driving record and ability to provide driving history — many postings require Class B, some prefer Class A for shuttle or road duties.
Demonstrated expertise operating yard tractors, yard hostlers, yard jockeys, and small commercial vehicles including tight-space backing, coupling and uncoupling maneuvers.
