Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate sit-down and stand-up forklifts, yard tractors, terminal tractors, and other powered industrial trucks to move loaded and empty trailers, containers, and palletized freight safely and efficiently across the yard.
Inspect forklifts and yard tractors at the start and end of each shift; document defects and coordinate with maintenance to ensure equipment is safe and serviceable before use.

Follow lockout/tagout procedures and isolation protocols when servicing equipment or addressing mechanical failures, ensuring no unauthorized operations occur during repairs.
Train and mentor new yard operators on site-specific procedures, safety rules, and equipment operation best practices; participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings.
Prioritize moves during peak periods and emergency situations (e.g., driver delays, priority shipments) while balancing safety and throughput objectives to minimize operational disruption.
Support cross-functional projects such as yard layout optimization, yard management system (YMS) implementation, and process improvement initiatives by providing operator-level feedback and input.
Perform pre-trip inspections for yard tractors and yard fleets, log mileage/hours, and escalate issues like tire damage, brake concerns, or lighting failures to fleet maintenance immediately.
Monitor and help enforce compliance with yard access control procedures, verifying driver identification, carrier paperwork, and hazard permits when directed by yard security or dispatch.

Secondary Functions

Assist warehouse teams with overflow pallet movement, staging for returns, and rework tasks during low yard activity periods to support overall throughput.
Participate in continuous improvement activities, Kaizen events, or 5S projects to improve yard flow, reduce travel distance, and increase loading/unloading efficiency.
Provide input into safety audits and near-miss investigations by supplying eyewitness accounts and operational context to help prevent future incidents.
Support training programs by developing simple SOP checklists, safety reminder posters, or short operator guides for new equipment models or process changes.
Conduct basic electronic data entry to reconcile manual load tickets with WMS records and escalate discrepancies to inventory control and operations management.
