Primary Functions

  • Conduct seasonal cleanups including leaf removal, debris and litter pickup, flowerbed preparation, and winterization tasks to prepare landscapes for changing seasons and to reduce pest and disease pressure.
  • Operate and maintain small engine equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws), performing pre- and post-shift inspections, basic troubleshooting, fuel and oil checks, and scheduling or reporting repairs to maintain safe, reliable equipment.
  • Load, unload, and transport materials such as topsoil, gravel, pavers, and plants using wheelbarrows, hand trucks, and pickup trucks; secure loads to prevent shifting and ensure safe delivery to job sites.
  • Assist with hardscape installation tasks—such as laying pavers, constructing simple retaining beds, and leveling walkways—by following crew lead instructions and using compaction tools, shovels, and rakes to achieve proper grades.
  • Perform irrigation system checks and basic maintenance including clearing nozzles, adjusting heads, locating leaks, and reporting complex repairs to irrigation technicians to maintain proper landscape watering.
  • Remove weeds and invasive vegetation manually or using mechanical tools, applying mulches and landscape fabric where appropriate to reduce future weed pressure and improve bed aesthetics.
  • Handle the application of fertilizers, soil amendments, and basic horticultural products in accordance with label instructions and company policies; participate in integrated pest management practices and escalate pesticide/herbicide applications to licensed staff.
  • Perform snow and ice removal duties during winter months—shoveling, plowing, applying de-icing materials, and clearing access routes—to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicle circulation for properties.
  • Conduct trash, brush, and storm debris removal from grounds and drainage areas to prevent clogging, reduce hazards, and maintain site cleanliness after storms or special events.
  • Follow daily work orders, site maps, and supervisor instructions to prioritize tasks, document completed work, and escalate any site issues (erosion, vandalism, drainage) that affect safety or project timelines.
  • Adhere to safety and PPE requirements, including lockout/tagout of equipment, safe lifting techniques, hazard communication, and responsible handling of fuel and chemicals to reduce injury and environmental risks.
  • Assist with basic fence repair, gate lubrication, and minor exterior building upkeep (painting touch-ups, pressure washing) when needed to preserve the overall condition of the property.
  • Perform quality control checks—weed-free beds, uniform mowing lines, crisp edging, and clean hardscapes—and correct deficiencies identified during walkthroughs or by supervisors.
  • Communicate with property managers, supervisors, and team members to coordinate daily priorities, report completed tasks, and note resident or tenant requests that affect grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain inventory of small tools, consumables, and seasonal supplies; request replacements in a timely manner to avoid work interruptions and track use for cost control.
  • Support landscape installation projects by digging trenches, setting irrigation lines, laying sod, and assisting specialized crews to ensure projects meet schedule and quality standards.
  • Operate compact equipment (skid steer, mini-excavator, utility vehicle) when certified and assigned, following site-specific safety protocols and manufacturer guidance to move material and perform light excavation tasks.
  • Prepare and document completed work using handheld devices or paper logs—timecards, material usage, and service reports—to ensure accurate billing, scheduling, and client communication.
  • Respond to emergency grounds issues (fallen trees, large debris, major irrigation breaks) as part of on-call rotation or emergency assignment to quickly restore site safety and function.
