Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Build trusting, sustained relationships with individual young people through regular one-to-one mentoring, active listening, goal-setting and progress review, ensuring each interaction is strengths-based and outcomes-focused.
  • Design, plan and deliver engaging group workshops and structured activities (life skills, employability, sexual health, anger management, study support) that are age-appropriate, culturally sensitive and informed by needs assessments.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and safety planning for young people presenting with safeguarding concerns, escalating to designated safeguarding leads and external agencies when required.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case records, session notes and outcome documentation in line with data protection (GDPR/HIPAA where relevant) and organisational reporting protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with families, carers, schools, probation services and statutory partners to create multi-agency care plans, attend meetings (CIN, TAC, CP conferences) and implement coordinated interventions.
  • Intervene in crisis situations to de‑escalate conflict, mediate disputes, and deliver short-term crisis support, including referrals to mental health services, housing or emergency accommodation.
  • Deliver evidence-informed behavior management strategies, restorative justice approaches and conflict resolution to reduce antisocial behaviour and promote positive peer relationships.
  • Identify and refer young people to specialist services (CAMHS, substance misuse treatment, sexual health clinics, homelessness services), and follow up to ensure engagement and continuity of care.
  • Plan and support transitional pathways for young people leaving care, moving into employment or training, or re-entering education, including CV support, job searches and interview preparation.
  • Facilitate participation and voice of young people through youth councils, feedback sessions and co-production of programs, ensuring lived experience shapes service design and delivery.
  • Monitor attendance, participation and engagement metrics, producing reports and insights for service managers and funders to demonstrate impact and meet contractual KPIs.
  • Develop and maintain age-appropriate safeguarding literature, consent forms and information resources for young people and families, promoting digital safety and healthy relationships.
  • Provide advocacy for young people within statutory systems (education, justice, health), supporting applications, appeals and navigation of bureaucracy with clear explanations and empowerment.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteer mentors, sessional staff and work placement students, including induction, safeguarding checks (DBS/PVG) and performance feedback.
  • Manage small project budgets, procure materials for activities, and support funding applications and bid writing by providing evidence of need and outcomes.
  • Deliver targeted outreach in community settings (parks, youth hubs, online platforms) to engage hard-to-reach or at-risk youth and signpost to services.
  • Implement culturally competent practice to meet the needs of diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ young people, refugees, and those with disabilities or neurodiversity.
  • Provide basic first aid, administer medications according to policy (where trained), and follow emergency procedures for incidents during sessions or residential stays.
  • Design and facilitate detached youthwork sessions and street-based engagement to establish contact with young people outside of formal settings and assess immediate needs.
  • Run and support residential, holiday or overnight programs for vulnerable young people, ensuring safeguarding, positive enrichment activities, and therapeutic routines.
  • Use motivational interviewing and solution-focused brief therapy techniques to support behavior change and enhance young people’s intrinsic motivation for positive decisions.
  • Collect qualitative and quantitative data for monitoring and evaluation, including pre/post surveys, case studies and testimonials to evidence outcomes and inform service improvement.
  • Participate in continuous professional development, supervision and reflective practice sessions to maintain best practice, challenge bias and support emotional resilience.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to promotional activities and social media outreach to raise awareness of youth services, recruit participants and promote events.
  • Support administrative tasks including scheduling sessions, maintaining attendance registers and coordinating venue bookings.
  • Assist with the development and review of policies and procedures (safeguarding, data protection, behaviour management) to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Liaise with local statutory services and community partners to develop referral pathways and ensure timely access to specialist support.
  • Provide transport or coordinate safe travel arrangements for young people attending activities, ensuring parental/guardian consents are in place.
  • Support fundraising and community engagement events by preparing materials, presenting service impact and gathering stakeholder feedback.
  • Participate in case reviews, multi-agency panels and service audits, providing accurate information and evidence to inform decision-making.
  • Help maintain activity spaces, equipment and resources to ensure a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for young people.
  • Support evaluation activities by collecting feedback, entering monitoring data and contributing to impact reports used for commissioning and grants.
  • Provide back-up cover for residential or emergency shifts as required, ensuring continuity of care and adherence to professional standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Diploma in Youth Work, CACHE, or equivalent vocational qualification.

Preferred Education:

  • Diploma, Foundation Degree, or Bachelor’s degree in Youth Work, Social Work, Community Development, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications in safeguarding, mental health first aid, or counselling techniques are highly desirable.
